I don’t know about you, but I am a huge “sobber” at the movies. So much so that, because I feel so embarrassed by my (spontaneous) behaviour, if I get an inkling that a particular movie is going to be teary, I altogether skip watching the movie in a public place.
Check out this other self-confessed “cryer” and her story: Confession Corner: Crying at the Movies
Okay, so we have established the fact that I am an accomplished weeper. Give me anything; a happy ending, a sad ending, a good book, God’s beautiful world, a hug from dad, or even a rainy day; all these could make tears well up in the corner of my eyes. The funny thing is I know some people who weep at the movies, but are rather stoic once they emerge out of the theatre and into their daily lives. Wonder why that happens?
While doing a bit of reading for this post, I came across this column about why people cry at the movies. The author mentions three reasons why people who are seemingly emotionless suddenly become crybabies (literally).
- Human Drama Unfolds Before our Eyes
- Emotional Magic of the Movie Musical Score
- Cinematography Enhances Experience

But, I am not interested in the hows and whys of crying at the movies. I am here to tell you about 5 classic films that will surely make you reach for your tissue box. Take a look.
I don’t have to talk about the plot or history of the film. The film in its entirety, the loving marriage, the unfaithfulness, the illegitimate son, the step-mother, all are perfect ingredients for a massive tear-jerker, and I was not spared. Watch the movie and know why.
This film is what inspired me to write this post in the first place. As it ran yesterday on Star Movies, I could not help but shedding a tear or two (even after an embarrassing crying session at the theatre where I watched it for the first time). There is just something about having a pet that makes a movie all the more teary; the next couple of suggestions will tell you more.
This is Walt Disney’s classic offering of an unlikely friendship between adversaries. A baby fox and hound grow up together not knowing that they are supposed to be enemies. Does friendship overcome all? Watch, cry a little and find out.
I remember watching this film when it was released worldwide. The touching story of a boy and a killer whale and especially its release back into the wild is just beautiful, one of my all-time favourites. Don’t miss the scene where Willy the killer whale jumps high over the boy into the open ocean, and finds its family again.
I coaxed some of my friends (in different cities) to watch it before I did, because I was scared. And all of them warned me to ‘take a tissue box’. As you can well imagine, I didn’t want to embarrass myself in the theatre again (So DVD it was!). Aamir Khan’s superb production and Darsheel Safary’s heart-warming tale of dyslexia, brought about a film that is all about the “sniff-factor”. I am warning you, tissues ARE required.
What are some of your favourite tearjerker movies? Don’t forget to leave your suggestions in the comments box.

hey all u guys are crazy. Why should you cry for something that is sooooo… unreal? All these actors are surrounded by camera crew, director, light boys, etc. etc. They do some emotional stuff before the camera, earn their bucks and go and have a ball! And you and I sit there in front of the idiot box or screen and cry our hearts out. Cant you see, all this is simply vain and waste of time? OK, what do I suggest. Dont watch anymore movies. Boycott them. Listen to music. Work your asses off and let your country progress. This opinion is particularly directed to all the Indian commentators there!
the all-time tearjerker movie list of mine is-
1. TITANIC
2. taare zameen par

Matrudevobhava ( Mother is GOD..) a Telugu movie (re-make) released in 1993. This movie original story is from kerala. In Ahdhrapradesh, i know in few theaters they distributed hand kerchiefs. I can guarantee any one, i mean any one, will cry while watching this movie. In this movie, the main lead, actress Madhavi, being a widow, suffering from a form of cancer, had to give her beloved kids for adoption. Singer Chitra sung few songs those will literally touch your soul. After watching this movie, i bet, your mom will be much more dearer to you.
Another movie is Sethu (telugu and Tamil) acted by Virkam. Hindi version is Tere naam by Salman khan.
Ek Duje ke liye (or maro charitra in Telugu), Sadma, etc are some of them makes many to cry.
My top 5 tearjerkers:
1. In Pursuit of Happyness
2. Road to Pardition

Being a South Indian, being from Karnataka, please permit to add some great Kannada Films as well. offcourse those of U who are not familiar with Kannada films please forgive me, but those of U who are familiar with Kannada will surely agree with my Choice.
1) KasturiNivasa , The late Dr Rajkumar, that unmatched stalwart of Kannada films, made us cry with his brilliant acting, especially in the climax where he dies with his hand looking downwards, signifying thAt he prefers to donate than receive. The late Ashwath, who died recently, was also outstanding as Dr Raj’s servant.
2) Bangaaradha Manushya, once again Dr Raj at his best, as an Educated Young man who settles down in the Village & helps his sister’s family, & also becomes a successful agriculturist. Finally, after his Family insults him, he walks out into an unknown destination. The songs ” Aagadhu Endhu” & ” Nagu Nagutha Nali ” are all time greats. the first named is so motivational, it can motivate anyone who is demotivated, & inspire everyone to march towards their goals. I feel every young man & woman should watch this Movie atleast once.
3) Naagarahaavu, the great puttanna Kanagal’s all time classic, which gave a new star to karnataka, the late Dr Vishnuvardhan. The climax where the Hero accidentally pushes his Teacher to death, & then jumps to death himself, is mind blowing. Both Vishnu & Late ashwath were unforgettable here.
4) Haalu Jenu, again it was Dr Raj here, as a husband who fights to save his wife from the clutches of cancer, only to lose her in the climax. Every Husband & wife should watch this. The song ” Haalu Jenu ondhaadha haage” moves one to tears, as also Dr Raj’s acting in the climax.
5) Benkiya Bale, that great Director duo, Dorai Bhagawan, gave a memorable classic. It is one of the all time hits of kannada Industry. Anant Nag, that fantastic actor, & Lakshmi, were both at their best. The travails of a poor Husband wife duo, who prefer to love each other despite unbearable poverty, was very touching. The climax, where the wife is transporting the husband’s dead body to the graveyard, but is dead herself,as found by the cartman, was exceptional. The song ” Bisilaadharenu maleyaadharenu” moves one to tears.
6) Bandhana, another all time hit, was also fantastic, with an award winning performance by Dr Vishnu Vardhan, & equally good performances by Suhaasini Maniratnam & Jai Jagadish. The song ” Premadha Kaadambari” well, who can forget it ?
7) Beladingala Baale, another masterpiece by another great Director, Sunil Kumar Desai, with a mind blowing performance by the One & Only Anant Nag. He p;ays a company Executive who is a Chess Grand Master. A girl calls him frequently & challenges him to discover her identity. He succeeds, but by that time she is dead. She is a cancer patient. The climax where the Hero comes to know about the girls death through a letter she has written, was world class. The rain outside, the tears in the hero’s eyes inside the car, it was smashing. U know, this film was unique, the Heroine is never shown through out, only her voice is heard. It was a box office hit, won many awards. If the climax of this film doesnt make U cry, nothing else can.
8) Naanu Nanna Kanasu, released very recently, just 2 months ago, this film is directed by Prakash Raj, & also stars him as the Hero. A moving tale of a Father- Daughter relationship as seen through the eyes of the Father. Prakash Raj is fabulous as the over possessive Father. The dialogues, the story, the performances the Song ” Ondhu Maamara maamaraadhaagondhu Gubbi Goodu ” all these make U cry. A must watch for all those parents who have a daughter.
There are many more, I will post as & when I remember. Hope even Non Kannadigas will develop some interest in Kannada Movies after reading this. Any Kannadigas read this, please feel free to respond with Ur views. I will be too glad to get back to U.
